Heart girth is measured around the thorax immediately behind the withers and elbows. Body length is measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
Both measurements should be taken with the horse standing squarely on level ground. The measuring tape should remain level and should sit snugly against the body without compressing the coat or underlying tissues.
Interpretation
The calculated value represents an estimated body weight in kilograms. It should not be interpreted as equivalent to a calibrated scale measurement.
The estimate is generally most useful in normally proportioned adult horses. Accuracy may be reduced in animals whose body shape differs substantially from the population on which the formula was based.
Where the result will influence a high-consequence decision, such as anaesthesia, potent medication dosing or management of a critically ill patient, the estimated value should be confirmed using a calibrated scale whenever possible.
Worked Example
An adult horse has a heart girth of 190 cm and a body length of 165 cm.
Estimated weight = 190 × 190 × 165 ÷ 11,877
Estimated weight = approximately 501.7 kg
The calculator would therefore report an estimated body weight of approximately 502 kg. This result should be considered alongside the horse’s breed, body condition and overall conformation.
Species Considerations
This formula is intended for adult horses and may not provide the same degree of accuracy in all equids.
Ponies, miniature horses and heavy draft breeds may have substantially different body proportions. The relationship between thoracic circumference, body length and true weight may therefore differ from that of a typical adult riding horse.
The estimate may also be less reliable in growing animals, pregnant mares, horses with marked obesity or emaciation, and animals with abdominal distension, oedema or unusual musculoskeletal development.
