Overview

The greatest value of Piglet Grimace Scale may be in repeated assessment. Record the date, time, observer, total and individual component scores. A stable total can conceal clinically important movement between domains, so retain the component-level record.
When comparing results, consider whether treatment, fatigue, fear, handling, medication or disease progression changed the context. Trend interpretation should include objective measurements and the broader clinical examination.
Limitations
Validation populations, species, settings and outcomes differ. A score developed for one population may not be calibrated for another breed, age group, disease process or clinical environment.
No numerical score can capture every welfare concern or clinical priority. Unexpected results should prompt review of the inputs and reassessment of the patient, not blind acceptance of the calculated total.
Documentation
Document the score name and version, component values, total, assessor, time and relevant interventions. Where the score informs a decision, record the reasoning and other findings that supported that decision.
The result should travel with its context during handover. Avoid copying only the total into a summary because future reviewers may need the individual components to understand the change.
